A detailed wood engraving by Winslow Homer depicting two men felling trees in a snowy forest, originally published in 1874.
Winslow Homer produced this wood engraving, titled Lumbering in Winter, for publication in Harper's Weekly in 1874. During this period, Homer worked extensively as an illustrator, documenting various aspects of American life. The image depicts two men engaged in manual labour within a dense, snow-covered forest. The foreground figure, positioned on snowshoes, is captured in the act of swinging an axe against a large tree trunk. A second figure works in the middle distance, further emphasising the physical demands of the trade.
Homer employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of nineteenth-century wood engraving. The texture of the tree bark, the scattered wood chips on the snow, and the woven structure of the snowshoes are rendered with careful attention to detail. The composition relies on the verticality of the trees to create a sense of enclosure, while the diagonal slope of the ground provides a clear spatial arrangement. The contrast between the dark, vertical forms of the timber and the bright, white expanse of the snow creates a stark visual balance.
This work reflects Homer's interest in the relationship between individuals and their environment. Rather than romanticising the scene, he presents the activity as a straightforward, arduous task. The collaboration between the artist and the engraver, J.P. Davis, whose name appears in the lower corner, was a standard practice for mass-produced illustrations of the era. This print offers a glimpse into the industrial and seasonal realities of the American frontier, captured through the lens of a draughtsman who would later become one of the most significant figures in American painting.
