A formal portrait of Luise Ulrike of Prussia by court painter Antoine Pesne, showcasing the refined fashion and royal iconography of the mid-eighteenth century.
This portrait depicts Luise Ulrike of Prussia, later Queen of Sweden, captured by the French painter Antoine Pesne. Pesne served as the court painter to the Prussian monarchy for several decades, and his work defines the visual culture of the Frederician era. In this composition, the subject is presented in a formal court setting, wearing a gown of light-coloured silk with elaborate lace detailing. The texture of the fabric is rendered with careful attention to the play of light across the folds and patterns of the material.
Luise Ulrike rests one hand upon a crown, a clear indicator of her royal status and future position as a consort. Beside her, a heavy blue velvet mantle, embroidered with gold crowns, provides a contrast to the lighter tones of her dress. The background remains dark and relatively indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's face and the intricate details of her attire. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the mid-eighteenth century, adorned with small decorative elements. The portrait reflects the conventions of aristocratic representation during the period, where the sitter's rank is communicated through specific symbols and the quality of their clothing.
Pesne was known for his ability to balance the formal requirements of royal portraiture with a degree of naturalism in the facial features. His technique involves smooth brushwork and a controlled palette, which allows for the precise depiction of jewellery and textiles. This work provides a record of the fashion and social expectations of the Prussian court during the mid-eighteenth century. The painting remains a representative example of the portraiture produced by Pesne during his long tenure in Berlin, where he documented the members of the Hohenzollern family and their associates.
