A fine etching by Giovanni Andrea Sirani depicting the tragic Roman figure of Lucretia, rendered with the dramatic emotional intensity of the Baroque period.
This etching by Giovanni Andrea Sirani depicts the Roman heroine Lucretia in the moments following her assault. Sirani, a Bolognese artist and pupil of Guido Reni, captures the subject with the characteristic emotional weight of the seventeenth-century Italian Baroque. Lucretia is shown in a state of physical and psychological collapse, her gaze directed upwards as she holds the dagger used to end her life. The composition relies on the contrast between the soft, rounded forms of the figure and the sharp, directional lines of the drapery and background.
Sirani employs a refined etching technique to define the textures of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the skin. The heavy shadows behind the figure provide a sense of depth, pushing the subject into the foreground. Below the main image, the print includes a coat of arms and a dedication, which were common features in prints intended for aristocratic patrons or collectors of the period. The inclusion of these heraldic elements suggests the work was commissioned or presented as a formal gift.
As a practitioner of the Bolognese school, Sirani focused on clarity of form and the expression of pathos. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the linear medium of etching. The work remains a fine example of how classical narratives were reinterpreted through the lens of Baroque sensibility, prioritising the internal state of the subject over mere physical action. The print is preserved in several major European collections, including the Rijksmuseum, where it is catalogued as part of the broader study of seventeenth-century printmaking techniques.
