A classical Renaissance engraving by Giacomo Francia depicting the tragic figure of Lucretia in a formal architectural setting.
This engraving depicts the Roman noblewoman Lucretia in the final moments of her life. The artist, Giacomo Francia, follows the classical tradition of portraying this subject as a figure of tragic resolve. Lucretia stands centrally, her body turned slightly to the side as she holds a dagger to her chest. The composition is structured by an architectural niche, which provides a sense of depth and formal order to the scene.
Francia employs precise, controlled lines to define the musculature and the folds of the drapery. The shading is achieved through parallel hatching and cross-hatching, techniques common in Italian printmaking of the early sixteenth century. The figure is rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy, reflecting the period's interest in the study of the human form. The background features a tiled floor and a grid-like window, elements that ground the figure in a specific, albeit stylised, interior space.
Lucretia is a recurring subject in Renaissance art, often used to explore themes of virtue and honour. In this print, the artist avoids excessive emotional display, choosing instead to focus on the stoic nature of the act. The drapery, which wraps around her lower body and hangs from her arm, adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static pose. The decorative elements at the top of the arch, including the dolphin motifs, suggest the influence of classical antiquity on the artistic vocabulary of the time. This work is a clear example of the technical skill involved in early Italian engraving, where the artist had to balance narrative clarity with the limitations of the copper plate. The print remains a study in the application of line to create both form and atmosphere within a monochromatic medium.
