Low Water - Alfred Wallis

A characteristic maritime scene by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, depicting a steamship at low tide in his signature naïve, non-perspectival style.

Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. He worked primarily on scavenged materials, such as cardboard packaging and scraps of wood, using limited supplies of ship paint. His approach to representation ignores traditional perspective, favouring a personal map of memory and experience. In Low Water, the composition is flattened, prioritising the relative importance of objects over their physical distance from the viewer.

The scene depicts a harbour at low tide, a subject Wallis returned to frequently. The large, dark hull of a steamship dominates the foreground, its form simplified into bold, geometric shapes. Behind the vessel, the harbour floor is exposed, rendered in earthy tones that contrast with the green hills and small, box-like houses in the distance. The artist often inscribed his titles directly onto the surface, as seen here in the upper left corner. His lack of formal training allowed him to bypass academic conventions, resulting in a direct, unmediated visual language that captured the essence of St Ives maritime life.

Wallis was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, who recognised the authenticity in his work. His output is characterised by a rejection of naturalism in favour of a symbolic arrangement of boats, buildings, and sea. The use of cardboard as a support often dictates the scale and shape of his work, with the edges of the material sometimes left visible. This print captures the raw, tactile quality of the original, preserving the visible brushwork and the specific, muted palette Wallis favoured. It offers a view into the working life of a Cornish port, filtered through the singular vision of an artist who painted what he knew from a lifetime spent at sea.
