Jan Steen, a master of Dutch Golden Age genre painting, frequently explored the theme of the lovesick woman in his work. This composition depicts a young woman seated on the edge of a bed, appearing pale and listless. A physician, dressed in a dark coat and hat, examines her pulse with a serious expression. The scene is set within a domestic interior, typical of the period, featuring a heavy bedstead and a small dog standing near a foot warmer in the foreground.
Steen employs a narrative approach to his subjects, often infusing his paintings with moralising undertones or subtle humour. The physician, a recurring figure in Steen's repertoire, is often portrayed with a degree of irony. In this instance, the diagnosis of lovesickness was a common trope in seventeenth-century medical and artistic discourse, often attributed to unrequited affection or melancholy. The woman's attire, including a white cap and a red jacket trimmed with fur, provides a contrast to the muted tones of the room. The light enters from a window at the rear, illuminating the interaction between the two figures while leaving the corners of the room in shadow.
