A dynamic 1914 oil painting by George Wesley Bellows, depicting a bustling crowd of skaters on a frozen pond against a backdrop of dark, snow-dusted hills.
George Wesley Bellows painted Love of Winter in 1914, capturing a scene of public recreation in the American Northeast. The composition depicts a crowd of figures gathered on a frozen pond, surrounded by snow-covered hills and dense, dark woodland. Bellows employs a palette dominated by deep blues, cool whites, and sharp contrasts, which effectively conveys the biting atmosphere of a winter day. The figures in the foreground are rendered with direct, energetic brushwork, while the distant hills recede into a moody, atmospheric blue haze.
Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists known for their interest in the everyday life of urban and suburban populations. While many of his contemporaries focused on the gritty realities of city streets, Bellows often turned his attention to the leisure activities of the middle class. In this work, the focus remains on the collective movement of the skaters and the social interactions occurring across the ice. The woman in the yellow coat serves as a visual anchor, drawing the eye into the centre of the activity, while the surrounding figures provide a sense of scale and bustle.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance large, dark masses against the reflective, bright surfaces of the ice and snow. The paint application is thick and confident, showing the influence of his teacher, Robert Henri. By avoiding overly sentimental depictions of the season, Bellows presents a candid observation of human activity within the natural environment. The work remains a clear example of his interest in capturing the energy of a specific moment, using colour and light to define the mood of the scene rather than relying on precise detail.
