A formal state portrait of the young Louis XV, painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1716, capturing the symbols and gravity of the French monarchy.
Hyacinthe Rigaud, the pre-eminent portraitist of the French court, captured the young Louis XV in this formal state portrait. Painted in 1716, the work depicts the future monarch at the age of six, shortly after his accession to the throne. Rigaud employs the visual vocabulary of absolute monarchy, surrounding the child with symbols of power, including the fleur-de-lis mantle, the sceptre, and the crown resting on a nearby cushion.
The composition follows the traditions of royal portraiture established by Rigaud himself in his earlier depictions of Louis XIV. The young king is seated on a throne, draped in heavy velvet and ermine, with a dramatic red curtain framing the scene. His pose, while youthful, mimics the gravity expected of a sovereign. The artist pays meticulous attention to the textures of the costume, from the delicate lace at the collar to the heavy, embroidered fabric of the royal robes. The lighting is carefully managed to draw attention to the face of the child, while the surrounding environment remains in a deeper, more subdued tone to maintain the focus on the royal figure.
This portrait functions as a political statement, asserting the continuity of the Bourbon dynasty during a period of transition. Rigaud avoids idealising the child beyond the requirements of his station, yet he successfully conveys the weight of the crown through the formal arrangement of the subject and his regalia. The painting remains a primary example of the French Baroque style, characterised by its theatricality, attention to material detail, and the use of grand, sweeping lines to create a sense of authority.
