A striking drypoint and etching by Christopher Nevinson, capturing the industrial geometry of the Brooklyn Bridge against the hazy Manhattan skyline.
Christopher Nevinson, a British artist associated with the Vorticist movement, produced this striking print during his time in New York. The work captures the industrial scale of the Brooklyn Bridge, using the geometric tension of its suspension cables to frame the distant Manhattan skyline. Nevinson employs a precise, linear approach to define the steel structure, contrasting the heavy, dark girders in the foreground with the atmospheric, hazy silhouettes of the city buildings beyond.
The composition relies on a sharp, diagonal perspective that draws the viewer into the scene. By positioning the observer on the bridge walkway, Nevinson creates a sense of immersion within the urban environment. The figures walking across the bridge are rendered as small, anonymous silhouettes, which serves to emphasise the sheer magnitude of the engineering feat. The print demonstrates the artist's fascination with the machine age and the rapid transformation of the early twentieth-century city.
Technically, the work makes effective use of drypoint to create soft, tonal variations in the sky and the distant buildings, while the etched lines provide the necessary rigidity for the bridge's cables and trusses. This balance between the delicate, misty background and the stark, dark foreground is characteristic of Nevinson's printmaking practice. The work avoids romanticising the city, opting instead for a detached, observational quality that reflects the speed and mechanical nature of modern life. It remains a notable example of how artists of the period engaged with the visual language of industrialisation and the changing character of the metropolis.
