Beskrivning
A refined woodblock print from the series Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners, capturing a woman in a moment of quiet observation.
This woodblock print is part of the series Fuzoku Sanjuniso, or Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners, produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in the late Meiji period. The series documents the changing fashions and social behaviours of women across different historical eras in Japan. This specific print, titled Looking Inquisitive, depicts a woman from the Tenpo era (1830-1844), identified by her specific hairstyle and attire.
The subject is framed by vertical bamboo blinds, which create a sense of intimacy and domestic enclosure. She is shown in a moment of quiet observation, her head turned slightly as if reacting to an unseen stimulus. Her kimono is decorated with a pattern of morning glories, a motif often associated with the summer season in Japanese art. The colour palette relies on soft mauves, muted greens, and the stark black of her hair, which provides a strong visual anchor for the composition.
Yoshitoshi was a master of the late Ukiyo-e tradition, often credited with bringing a new psychological depth to the genre. Unlike earlier prints that focused on idealised beauty, his work frequently captures specific, fleeting expressions. The clean lines and flat colour application are characteristic of the woodblock medium, yet the subtle shading on the woman's face demonstrates the technical sophistication of the era. The print serves as a historical record of aesthetic preferences and social conduct during the nineteenth century, reflecting the artist's interest in both traditional Japanese motifs and the modern sensibilities emerging during his lifetime.
