A grid-based abstract work by Alan Shields, featuring hand-stitched thread and acrylic paint on canvas.
Alan Shields was a central figure in the development of Post-Minimalist art during the 1970s. His practice frequently blurred the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and textile work. In this piece, Shields employs a grid structure that serves as both a formal constraint and a canvas for his exploration of colour and material. The work consists of a hand-stitched grid, where each individual square is filled with distinct applications of acrylic paint.
By using thread to construct the grid, Shields introduces a tactile, three-dimensional quality to the surface. The paint does not merely sit on top of the fabric; it interacts with the weave and the underlying structure of the stitching. This approach reflects his interest in the physical properties of his materials. The repetition of the grid allows for a rhythmic distribution of colour, where clusters of blue, yellow, orange, and green create subtle shifts across the surface.
Shields often rejected the traditional stretcher bar, preferring to allow his works to hang or drape in ways that responded to the architecture of the space. This specific work demonstrates his ability to maintain a rigorous internal logic while embracing the imperfections of handmade processes. The grid acts as a vessel for his chromatic experiments, allowing the viewer to observe the interaction between individual marks and the collective whole. His work remains a significant example of how artists of his generation moved away from the rigid dictates of Minimalism toward a more process-oriented and material-focused aesthetic. The result is a composition that feels both systematic and organic, inviting close inspection of the relationship between the painted squares and the structural thread work.
