A classic uchiwa-e fan print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Long Bridge at Seta over Lake Biwa, featuring serene waters and mountain vistas.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Long Bridge at Seta, a site historically celebrated in Japanese poetry and art. It belongs to the series Eight Views of Omi, which draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese theme of the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang. The composition is presented in the form of an uchiwa-e, a fan print, which dictates the rounded edges and the specific spatial arrangement of the scene.
The print captures the expansive waters of Lake Biwa, with the iconic long bridge stretching across the foreground. Hiroshige employs a clear sense of distance, placing the bridge in the lower section while the distant mountains rise against a graduated sky. Several sailing vessels traverse the lake, their white sails providing a rhythmic contrast to the deep blue of the water. The bridge itself, a structure of timber and stone, connects the landmasses, guiding the eye through the composition.
Hiroshige uses a refined colour palette, dominated by shades of blue, green, and earthy tones for the mountains. The application of bokashi, a technique of colour gradation, is visible in the sky and the water, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The print features the characteristic cartouches containing the series title and the artist's signature, alongside publisher seals. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate a classical poetic subject into a visual format suitable for the popular market of the Edo period. The focus remains on the quiet observation of the natural environment and the human presence within it, typical of Hiroshige's approach to the genre.
