A striking 1898 woodcut by William Nicholson from his London Types series, capturing a street trader with bold lines and a limited, evocative colour palette.
William Nicholson produced the series London Types in 1898, capturing the diverse characters of the city at the turn of the century. This print depicts a costermonger, a street trader who was a common sight in Victorian London. Nicholson employs a restricted palette and bold, graphic lines to define the subject, a technique influenced by his work with the Beggarstaff Brothers. The composition is stark, focusing on the figure in the foreground while the background remains simplified, suggesting the urban environment through minimal detail.
The costermonger is rendered with a sense of quiet dignity. Nicholson avoids excessive sentimentality, choosing instead to present the figure through flat planes of colour and strong silhouettes. The use of woodcut as a medium allows for a tactile quality, where the grain and the physical application of ink contribute to the overall aesthetic. This series is recognised for its contribution to the revival of the woodcut in British printmaking, moving away from the highly detailed engravings that dominated the era.
By focusing on the everyday worker, Nicholson provides a social record of London life. The figure stands against a muted background, which draws attention to the specific attire and posture of the subject. The print is an example of the artist's ability to convey character through economy of form. It remains a significant piece for those interested in the intersection of graphic design and social history during the late nineteenth century.
