A detailed 19th-century engraving by François de Meersman depicting the young Louis XVII in the Temple prison.
This engraving depicts the young Louis-Charles, Duke of Normandy, later known as Louis XVII, during his imprisonment in the Temple prison in Paris. The subject was a common theme in nineteenth-century European art, reflecting the public fascination with the tragic fate of the French royal family following the Revolution. François de Meersman captures the boy in a moment of isolation, seated on a low stool against a stark, textured wall. His posture is slumped, and his expression conveys a sense of weary resignation.
The composition relies on a controlled use of light and shadow to create a sombre atmosphere. The illumination originates from an unseen source, casting the figure into relief while leaving the corners of the cell in deep shadow. The fine lines of the engraving technique are particularly effective in rendering the textures of the stone wall, the boy's simple clothing, and the sparse objects scattered on the floor. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the psychological state of the sitter.
De Meersman, a Belgian engraver, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The cross-hatching and varied line weights define the form of the boy and the depth of the cramped space. The work functions as a narrative piece, inviting the viewer to consider the historical circumstances of the French monarchy through the lens of individual suffering. The print is presented with its original margins, showing the subtle signs of age that characterise historical paper works. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the mid-nineteenth century, where historical accuracy and emotional resonance were often combined in print media.
