Loch Cluanie in the western Highlands reflects snow bright mountain shoulders across a still blue expanse, with pale shoreline stones and russet moorland giving the spring scene depth and warmth.
Loch Cluanie occupies the southeastern end of Glen Shiel, where its water is retained by a dam completed in 1956. It forms part of the Glenmoriston hydroelectric scheme. A tunnel diverts water from Loch Loyne into this reservoir, linking two of the upper Highland catchments.
White snowfields cling to the high ridges on both sides, repeated as bright broken bands across the calm water. The right shore curves around a low ochre headland, edged with pale stones and sparse dark shrubs. Large grey rocks emerge from the near heather. Clean blue sky and tall white clouds above brown lower slopes suggest spring arriving below the lingering mountain snow.
