Paolo Veronese, a master of the Venetian school, painted this portrait of Livia da Porto Thiene and her daughter Porzia around 1552. The work depicts the wife of Count Iseppo da Porto, a prominent figure in Vicenza, alongside her young child. The composition is notable for its directness, placing the figures within a narrow, architectural space that draws the viewer's attention to the subjects rather than the surroundings.
Livia is dressed in a gown of deep red, trimmed with fur, which suggests the status and wealth of the family. Her daughter, Porzia, stands to her side, clutching her mother's dress. The interaction between the two is captured with a sense of quiet observation. Veronese employs his characteristic handling of light and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabrics and the soft features of the faces. The colour palette is dominated by the warm, earthy tones of the mother's attire, contrasted against the cooler green of the daughter's dress.
This painting is a fine example of mid-sixteenth-century Venetian portraiture, where the focus shifted towards capturing the presence of the sitter with a degree of naturalism.
