A delicate 1864 etching by Jules de Goncourt, capturing a peaceful moment of a child sleeping with fine, precise line work.
This etching by Jules de Goncourt captures a quiet, domestic moment of a child in repose. Known primarily for his literary collaborations with his brother Edmond, Jules de Goncourt also practised as an artist, producing a series of etchings that reflect the mid-nineteenth-century interest in intimate, everyday subjects. The work demonstrates a focus on the tactile qualities of the scene, specifically the soft folds of the bedding and the delicate lace of the child's bonnet.
The composition relies on a series of fine, hatched lines to create volume and shadow. By varying the density of these marks, the artist defines the contours of the child's face and the weight of the fabric. The perspective is close, drawing the viewer into the immediate vicinity of the sleeping figure. This approach avoids theatricality, opting instead for a direct observation of the subject. The artist's signature and the date, 1864, are visible in the lower right corner, placing the work within the period of his most active engagement with the medium of etching.
As a piece of nineteenth-century printmaking, this work illustrates the technical proficiency required to translate the softness of skin and textile into the linear language of the copper plate. The lack of heavy contrast allows the focus to remain on the peaceful expression of the child. It is a study of stillness, rendered with a disciplined hand. The print offers a glimpse into the private sphere, a common theme among artists of the period who sought to document the nuances of daily life. The monochromatic palette emphasises the texture of the paper and the ink, providing a clean, classic aesthetic suitable for a variety of interior settings.
