A refined 1785 sanguine chalk drawing by Louis Rolland Trinquesse, depicting a woman in a domestic setting.
Louis Rolland Trinquesse, a French draughtsman active during the late eighteenth century, produced this work in 1785. Executed in sanguine chalk, the drawing captures a woman seated near a fireplace. The medium allows for a soft, warm tone that defines the contours of her dress and the gentle light emanating from the hearth. Her posture is relaxed, with one arm extended as if gesturing towards the fire or inviting a guest to join her, which aligns with the title, L'Invite.
Trinquesse is recognised for his ability to render the textures of contemporary fashion with precision. The folds of the subject's gown, the delicate lace of her cap, and the subtle shading of the interior space demonstrate his technical control over the chalk medium. The composition relies on diagonal lines created by the chair and the fireplace, which guide the viewer's eye across the page. The background is kept minimal, using light hatching to suggest the depth of the room without distracting from the central figure.
This drawing reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where domestic scenes and intimate portraits were common subjects for artists working in the Rococo tradition. Trinquesse often focused on the elegance of his sitters, capturing a sense of poise and quiet observation. The date, inscribed in the lower right corner, places this work during a period when the artist was refining his approach to portraiture and genre subjects. The use of red chalk, or sanguine, was a popular choice for artists of the time, as it provided a naturalistic skin tone and allowed for a range of tonal values. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's skill in capturing a fleeting moment of domestic life through a refined and disciplined use of line.
