A fine art print of a 17th-century ink calligraphy letter by the master Wang Duo, showcasing his fluid, expressive running script.
Wang Duo, a prominent official and calligrapher during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, is recognised for his mastery of the running and cursive scripts. This piece displays his characteristic approach to brushwork, where the speed and pressure of the ink application create a sense of movement across the paper. The characters exhibit a balance between controlled structure and fluid, expressive strokes, reflecting the artist's deep engagement with the traditions of earlier masters such as Mi Fu and Yan Zhenqing.
In this letter, the ink density varies, with some characters appearing bold and dark while others are executed with a drier brush, revealing the texture of the paper beneath. This technique, often referred to as 'flying white', adds a rhythmic quality to the composition. The arrangement of the columns is deliberate, guiding the eye through the text with a natural flow that mimics the cadence of speech. The presence of red seal impressions at the bottom left provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the monochrome ink and marking the work as a personal correspondence or a formal record of communication.
Wang Duo's work is often studied for its departure from the more rigid, conservative styles of his contemporaries. He favoured a more dramatic, expansive use of space and a vigorous application of the brush. This letter serves as an example of his ability to maintain clarity and elegance even within a highly expressive and personal format. The paper shows signs of age, with subtle discolouration that complements the ink tones, providing a sense of historical continuity. This print captures the nuances of the original brushwork, allowing for a close examination of the calligraphic technique and the artist's individual hand.
