A reproduction of the iconic wild cursive script by Tang Dynasty master Zhang Xu, capturing the fluid, expressive energy of his brushwork.
The Letter about a Stomachache, or Du tong tie, is a primary example of the wild cursive script, or kuangcao, associated with the Tang Dynasty calligrapher Zhang Xu. This work displays a departure from the regulated, balanced structures of earlier calligraphic traditions. Instead, the brushwork exhibits a rapid, fluid motion that prioritises the expression of the artist's internal state over strict legibility.
Zhang Xu is often grouped with Huaisu as a master of this unrestrained style. The characters in this piece appear to flow into one another, with varying pressure and speed creating a sense of kinetic energy. The ink application ranges from thick, saturated strokes to thin, dry lines, reflecting the physical rhythm of the writing process. The composition lacks the rigid grid structure typical of formal clerical or regular scripts, opting for a more organic arrangement that mirrors the spontaneity of the artist's hand.
This specific print reproduces the visual characteristics of the original manuscript, capturing the contrast between the dark ink and the aged paper surface. The work is not merely a record of text, but a visual performance. The characters are elongated and distorted, pushing the boundaries of traditional brush techniques. By focusing on the movement of the brush, Zhang Xu transformed the act of writing into a form of abstract expression. This piece remains a subject of study for those interested in the history of Chinese calligraphy and the development of expressive, non-representational mark-making. The print offers a clear view of the calligraphic forms, allowing for an examination of the brushwork and the spatial relationships between the characters.
