Eugène Delâtre, a master of the intaglio process, produced this delicate work in 1904. The composition features two apple trees framing a quiet rural scene. A woman and a young child walk away from the viewer, their figures small against the expanse of the orchard. The artist employs aquatint to achieve soft, atmospheric transitions, particularly in the hazy background and the dappled light filtering through the foliage.

Delâtre was the son of the printer Auguste Delâtre, who worked with many of the most famous printmakers of the nineteenth century. This background provided Eugène with an exceptional understanding of the technical possibilities of the copper plate. In this print, he balances the linear precision of the etching needle with the tonal washes of aquatint. The result is a scene that captures a sense of stillness and domestic simplicity. The palette remains restrained, relying on muted greens, soft browns, and the singular, deliberate pop of red in the woman's bodice to draw the eye toward the centre of the frame.

Unlike the high-contrast works of his contemporaries, Delâtre favoured a gentle, painterly approach to printmaking. The trees are rendered with a focus on their organic, gnarled forms, while the grass in the foreground is suggested through light, rhythmic strokes. The work reflects the artist's interest in the French countryside, a recurring subject throughout his career. By avoiding heavy outlines, he maintains a light, airy quality that allows the paper to breathe.
