A depiction of construction workers on a Parisian rooftop, painted by Maximilien Luce in 1929.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, frequently turned his attention to the lives of the working class in Paris. In Les Maçons, he depicts a group of construction workers engaged in their daily labour on a rooftop. The composition focuses on the physical exertion required for such tasks, showing the men operating pulleys and handling materials amidst the scaffolding.
Luce employs a technique that reflects his earlier experimentation with divisionism, though by 1929, his brushwork had become broader and more fluid. The palette consists of earthy tones, reflecting the brickwork and dust of the construction site, contrasted against a clear blue sky. The figures are rendered with a sense of solidity, their postures conveying the weight and rhythm of their movements. Unlike the idealised depictions of labour found in some academic art of the period, this work presents the scene with a direct, observational quality.
The painting captures a specific moment in the urban transformation of Paris, where the constant cycle of building and repair defined the city's character. Luce, who was known for his anarchist sympathies, often chose subjects that honoured the dignity of manual work. By placing the viewer on the scaffolding alongside the masons, he creates a sense of proximity to the subject. The structural elements of the wooden beams and the ropes provide a geometric framework that organises the figures within the frame. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's interest in the social realities of the early twentieth century, rendered with a focus on light and form rather than narrative sentimentality.
