A reproduction of the title page from the 1562 Lyons edition of Hans Holbein the Younger's Dance of Death, featuring the printer's mark of Jehan Frellon.
This print reproduces the title page from the 1562 Lyons edition of Les Images de la Mort, a collection of woodcuts originally designed by Hans Holbein the Younger. The series, known as the Dance of Death, explores the universality of mortality through a sequence of scenes where a skeletal figure of Death interacts with individuals from every social stratum.
The title page features the printer's mark of Jehan Frellon, depicting a butterfly and a crab within an ornate cartouche, accompanied by the Latin motto 'Matura' (meaning 'hasten slowly'). The typography reflects the standard printing practices of sixteenth-century France, utilising a clear, serif typeface that contrasts with the textured, aged paper of the original volume. Holbein's original designs for the series were cut into wood blocks by Hans Lützelburger, whose technical precision allowed for a level of detail rarely seen in woodcuts of the period.
This edition includes additional theological texts, such as sermons by Saint Cyprian and Saint John Chrysostom, which were intended to provide spiritual comfort alongside the memento mori imagery. The composition of the title page is balanced and formal, adhering to the conventions of Renaissance book design. The print captures the historical aesthetic of early modern typography and the sombre, philosophical themes that defined Holbein's contribution to European printmaking. By presenting the title page, this print offers a glimpse into the material culture of the sixteenth century, where the intersection of art, religion, and the printing press shaped public discourse on life and death.
