Séraphine Louis, often known simply as Séraphine de Senlis, created this work during a period of intense creative output. Her approach to painting was self-taught, emerging from a life of domestic service in the town of Senlis. This piece, Les Grappes de Raisin, displays her characteristic obsession with botanical forms, rendered with a rhythmic, almost hypnotic repetition of leaves and fruit.

The composition is structured around a central, tree-like trunk from which branches erupt in a symmetrical, fan-like arrangement. Each leaf and cluster of grapes is defined by a meticulous, repetitive stroke, creating a surface that feels dense and textured.
