A Neo-Impressionist study of timber supports on the Cure river, featuring the characteristic short, rhythmic brushwork of Maximilien Luce.
Maximilien Luce, a central figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement, captures a quiet moment along the Cure river in this work. The composition focuses on the wooden structures, or 'chevalets', used for timber floating, which protrude from the water in the foreground. Luce employs a technique of short, distinct brushstrokes that break down the light reflecting off the surface of the river. This method allows the viewer to perceive the movement of the water and the shifting quality of the light at the time of day depicted.
The palette consists of cool blues and purples for the shadows and the wooden supports, contrasted against the warmer, golden tones of the sky and the reflections on the water. The background features a bridge and a line of trees, providing a sense of depth and scale to the scene. Unlike the more rigid pointillism of Georges Seurat, Luce uses a freer, more expressive application of paint. This approach maintains the structural integrity of the objects while imbuing the scene with a sense of atmospheric presence.
Luce often turned his attention to the rural areas of France, finding subjects in the daily labour and the natural environment. This painting reflects his interest in the interaction between human-made structures and the natural world. The placement of the timber supports creates a rhythmic pattern across the lower half of the canvas, drawing the eye toward the distant bridge. The work demonstrates his ability to balance observational accuracy with a personal interpretation of colour and light. By focusing on the mundane activity of timber transport, Luce elevates a functional scene into a study of light and form, typical of his mature period when he moved away from strict scientific colour theory toward a more intuitive style.
