Beskrivning
A striking abstract composition from Cy Twombly's 2001 Lepanto series, featuring expressive vertical drips and warm, fiery tones.
This work is the eighth panel from the twelve-part series titled Lepanto, created by Cy Twombly in 2001. The series depicts the 1571 naval battle between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire. Twombly approaches this historical subject through a sequence of abstract gestures rather than literal representation. The composition is organised horizontally, with vertical drips of paint suggesting the movement of ships or the flow of blood across the sea.
The palette is dominated by warm yellows, oranges, and deep reds, which evoke the fire and violence of the conflict. Twombly uses thin, calligraphic lines to define shapes that resemble galley ships or abstract forms of combat. The paint application varies from dense, impasto-like clusters to thin, watery washes that run down the surface of the canvas. This technique creates a sense of instability and urgency, reflecting the chaotic nature of the historical event.
Twombly, who spent much of his career in Italy, often drew inspiration from classical history and mythology. In this series, he engages with the legacy of the Battle of Lepanto, a subject previously explored by artists such as Titian and Veronese. By stripping away the figurative elements found in traditional history painting, Twombly focuses on the visceral experience of the event. The repetition of forms across the twelve panels provides a rhythmic structure, guiding the viewer through the progression of the battle from its initial engagement to its aftermath. The work demonstrates Twombly's ability to balance controlled mark-making with the unpredictable nature of fluid paint, resulting in a composition that is both aggressive and meditative.
