An eighteenth-century etching by Johann Michael Frey, based on a design by Jean Pillement, depicting a serene pastoral river scene.
This etching, titled 'Le Voir assigne par la Comodite de Voisinages', is a fine example of the collaborative print culture prevalent in the eighteenth century. Johann Michael Frey, a Swiss engraver, executed this work after a design by the French artist Jean Pillement. The print belongs to the 'Collection amusante des Paysages de Jean Pillement', a series that explored rural life and pastoral scenes through a refined, decorative lens.
The composition follows the conventions of the period, featuring a wide, open view of a river valley. In the foreground, a traveller on a donkey sits near a seated figure, providing a sense of scale to the expansive environment. The middle ground contains livestock grazing near a cluster of rustic buildings, while the background recedes into soft, rolling hills under a sky filled with light, billowing clouds. Frey uses delicate hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of the terrain, the foliage of the trees, and the architectural details of the small hamlet.
As a printmaker, Frey was known for his technical precision, which allowed him to translate Pillement's fluid drawings into the more rigid medium of the copper plate. The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in the picturesque, where rural life is presented as a harmonious and orderly existence. The inclusion of the title and publication details at the bottom of the plate is characteristic of the era, providing context regarding the original design and the imperial privilege under which it was produced. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the mid-eighteenth century, where the depiction of nature was often filtered through a lens of classical balance and decorative grace.
