A refined eighteenth-century engraving by Charles Clément Bervic, depicting a quiet moment of rest between an elderly man and a young boy.
This engraving, titled Le Repos, is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Charles Clément Bervic. Bervic was a master of the burin, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the rigorous medium of copperplate engraving. The work depicts an elderly man resting with a young boy asleep at his feet, a scene that evokes a quiet, domestic stillness. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a stable, triangular formation that draws the eye to the weary yet gentle expressions of the subjects.
Bervic worked from a painting by Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié, a French artist celebrated for his genre scenes of everyday life. The engraving captures the textures of the clothing, the rough surface of the stone ledge, and the soft, naturalistic rendering of the figures. The cross-hatching and fine line work demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship required in eighteenth-century printmaking. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the dedication at the base of the print reflects the formal presentation common in aristocratic commissions of the period.
As a printmaker, Bervic was highly regarded for his clarity and control. His work often served to disseminate the compositions of contemporary painters to a wider audience. This particular piece maintains the narrative focus of the original painting, prioritising the emotional resonance of the quiet moment over excessive ornamentation. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the figures, creating a sense of depth and volume. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where genre subjects were treated with a level of technical seriousness and formal composition typically reserved for historical or mythological themes.
