A serene coastal scene by Charles Angrand, rendered in the characteristic block-like brushwork of the Neo-Impressionist movement.
Charles Angrand was a significant figure within the Neo-Impressionist movement, known for his rigorous application of colour theory and divisionist techniques. In this work, he depicts a coastal scene through a series of distinct, block-like brushstrokes that construct the image from the surface up. Rather than blending colours on the palette, Angrand places individual touches of pigment side by side, allowing the viewer's eye to perform the optical mixing necessary to perceive the final image.
The composition is structured around the contrast between the warm, earthy tones of the shoreline and the cool, luminous greens of the water. Small boats are scattered across the harbour, their forms simplified into essential shapes that harmonise with the surrounding environment. The hillside, dotted with structures, is rendered in a dense mosaic of colour, suggesting the texture of the architecture and the foliage without resorting to fine detail. The sky above is treated with the same systematic approach, using lighter, pastel-toned marks to convey the atmospheric quality of the day.
Angrand's approach to this scene reflects his interest in the scientific study of light and perception. By breaking the scene into these constituent parts, he creates a sense of shimmering movement across the water and the land. This method avoids the rigid, mechanical appearance found in some other works of the period, as his brushwork remains expressive and varied in size. The result is a balanced, rhythmic arrangement that captures the essence of a quiet port. His work from this period demonstrates a move away from the strict, tiny dots of early Pointillism toward larger, more deliberate strokes that maintain the integrity of the colour while building a cohesive, unified scene.
