A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting a coastal fish market in Dieppe, based on an original painting by Bonard.
This etching, titled Le Marchand de Poissons de Dieppe, captures a coastal scene typical of late eighteenth-century French printmaking. The composition centres on a small fish market stall situated near the shoreline, where figures engage in trade. The artist, Gleich, worked from an original painting by Bonard, as indicated by the inscription Bonard Pinx. The scene depicts the daily life of the Dieppe fishing community, with boats visible in the distance and figures gathered in the foreground.
The print employs a monochromatic sepia tone, characteristic of the period's preference for warm, ink-washed aesthetics. The line work is precise, utilising cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone building, the clothing of the merchants, and the subtle ripples of the sea. The perspective draws the eye from the bustling stall on the left toward the open water on the right, creating a sense of spatial depth. The inclusion of a small child and seated figures adds a narrative quality to the work, suggesting the social dynamics of a maritime town.
Published in Paris by Charbonnier on Rue Saint-Ursule, this work reflects the commercial production of prints during the era. Such engravings were often created to disseminate popular compositions to a wider audience, allowing collectors to own reproductions of contemporary paintings. The attention to detail in the architecture and the maritime equipment provides a glimpse into the regional character of Dieppe during this period. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in translating oil paintings into the medium of engraving, maintaining the tonal balance and compositional structure of the original work.
