A satirical lithograph from 1848 by Honoré-Victorin Daumier, depicting a schoolmaster giving absurdly precise instructions to his pupils at bedtime.
This lithograph is part of the series 'Professeurs et Moutards', published in the French satirical journal Le Charivari in 1848. Honoré-Victorin Daumier, a master of social commentary, depicts a rigid schoolmaster instructing his pupils in a dormitory. The boys, wearing nightcaps, sit upright in their beds, listening to the master's absurdly precise instructions for falling asleep. The caption records the master's voice: 'Attention... at the first clap of my hands you will place your head on the pillow, at the second clap you will close your eyes, at the third clap you will all be asleep.'
Daumier uses his characteristic lithographic technique to capture the atmosphere of the scene. The heavy shadows and expressive, slightly exaggerated facial features of the figures convey the humour and the underlying critique of authoritarian education systems prevalent in mid-nineteenth-century France. The composition is balanced, with the teacher positioned on the left, his hands raised in a gesture of control, while the row of pupils on the right creates a rhythmic, repetitive visual element. The stark contrast between the dark background and the white nightclothes draws the eye directly to the interaction between the adult and the children. This work demonstrates Daumier's ability to condense complex social observations into a single, punchy image. His draughtsmanship is focused on character and gesture rather than decorative detail, making the social satire immediate and accessible. The print serves as a record of the artist's engagement with the daily life and institutional structures of his time, presented with the sharp wit that defined his career as a political and social cartoonist.
