Caspar David Friedrich, a central figure of German Romanticism, produced this work during the later stages of his career. The painting, known as 'Large Enclosure' (Grosser Gehege), depicts a river basin near Dresden at sunset. Friedrich employs a low horizon line, which allows the sky to occupy the majority of the canvas. This compositional choice draws the viewer into the vastness of the atmosphere, where the pale yellow light of the setting sun transitions into a cool, blue twilight.

The foreground features a marshy riverbed with shallow pools of water reflecting the sky. These pools are rendered with precise, calm brushwork, creating a sense of stillness. Beyond the water, a line of dark, silhouetted trees stretches across the middle ground, acting as a barrier between the viewer and the distant, hazy horizon. The trees are painted with minimal detail, emphasising their role as dark shapes against the luminous sky.

Friedrich often used natural subjects to convey internal states or philosophical ideas. In this work, the expansive sky and the quiet, reflective water suggest a contemplation of the infinite. Unlike his earlier, more dramatic mountain scenes, this painting relies on a subtle, horizontal structure. The lack of human figures or architectural elements focuses the viewer entirely on the interaction between light and the physical environment. The work remains a primary example of how Friedrich utilised observation of the natural world to create a sense of quietude and spatial depth.
