A mezzotint print depicting a horse standing near a sleeping figure, based on a composition by Philips Wouwerman.
This mezzotint, dated 1730, captures a quiet moment in a rural setting. The composition features a horse standing in the foreground, its form rendered with the soft, tonal transitions characteristic of the mezzotint technique. To the right, a figure rests beneath the boughs of a bare tree. The artist employs a limited tonal range to create a sense of atmosphere, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow across the animal's coat and the surrounding terrain.
Dirk Koedijck was active during the latter part of the seventeenth century, and this work reflects the period's interest in pastoral subjects. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of mezzotint, a process that allows for subtle gradations of grey rather than relying solely on line work. By roughening the copper plate to hold ink, the artist achieves a velvety texture that defines the horse's silhouette against the lighter sky. The scene is devoid of complex narrative, presenting instead a simple observation of daily life in the countryside.
The inclusion of the inscription 'P. W. pinx' suggests that Koedijck based this print on a painting by Philips Wouwerman, a contemporary known for his depictions of horses and equestrian themes. This practice of reproducing paintings through printmaking was common, allowing wider access to popular compositions. The work remains a study in tonal balance, where the stillness of the sleeping figure complements the steady presence of the horse. It provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where the rural environment served as a frequent subject for both painters and printmakers. The print is a clear example of the technical skill required to translate the painterly qualities of an original oil work into the medium of engraving.
