A detailed Baroque etching by Felix Meyer depicting a rugged mountain stream and cascading waterfalls, rendered with precise, rhythmic line work.
This etching by Felix Meyer captures a rugged, mountainous terrain defined by cascading water and rocky outcrops. Meyer, a German painter and etcher active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, often focused on the depiction of natural environments, drawing inspiration from the mountainous regions of Switzerland and Southern Germany. His technique relies on precise, rhythmic hatching to define the textures of stone, foliage, and the movement of water.
The composition follows a classic arrangement, with heavy, shadowed rock formations framing the sides of the image. These elements guide the eye toward the centre, where a series of small waterfalls tumble over stone ledges into a stream. The artist uses varying densities of line to suggest depth, from the dark, dense cross-hatching in the foreground rocks to the lighter, more sparse strokes used for the distant hills. The trees, rendered with delicate, spindly branches, add a sense of scale and verticality to the scene.
Unlike the highly polished, idealised views of his contemporaries, Meyer’s work retains a sense of raw, observed nature. The etching process allows for a spontaneity in the line work, particularly in the rendering of the water, which appears fluid and energetic against the static, solid forms of the surrounding cliffs. This print reflects the period interest in topographical studies and the aesthetic appreciation of wild, untamed geography. The work is a fine example of the printmaking traditions of the era, where the artist balanced technical control with an evocative approach to natural light and shadow. It remains a clear representation of the Baroque interest in the dramatic qualities of the physical world, presented here through the monochromatic clarity of the etched line.
