A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting a pastoral scene with livestock and a milkmaid, characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age.
This etching, attributed to Jan van Noordt, captures a quiet pastoral scene typical of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition focuses on a small herd of livestock, including cattle, sheep, and goats, resting in a field. A milkmaid is visible in the background, partially obscured by the foliage of a gnarled tree. The artist employs fine, precise lines to define the textures of the animals' coats and the rugged terrain of the pasture.
Van Noordt, a Dutch painter and etcher, was active in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. His work often reflects the influence of his contemporaries who specialised in animal studies. The etching demonstrates a clear interest in naturalistic observation, with the animals rendered in various poses that suggest a moment of calm. The background remains largely open, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical details of the creatures in the foreground.
While the plate bears the mark 'P.Pot', suggesting an association with the work of Paulus Potter, the stylistic execution is consistent with the output of Van Noordt. The print serves as a record of the period's fascination with rural life and the domestic animals that were central to the Dutch economy and culture. The use of light and shadow, achieved through varied hatching techniques, provides a sense of volume to the forms. This piece is a representative example of the printmaking traditions of the era, where artists sought to document the natural world with technical precision. It remains a study of form and composition, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the quiet interaction between the animals and their environment.
