A 1628 etching by Gerard van der Horst and Jan van de Velde II, depicting a tranquil river scene with a stone bridge, a tower, and figures.
This etching, dated 1628, captures a serene river scene typical of the Dutch Golden Age. Gerard van der Horst provided the design, while the printmaker Jan van de Velde II executed the plate. The composition follows a classic structure: a foreground bank with a lone fisherman and a traveller carrying a pack, a middle ground featuring a stone bridge and a small cottage, and a distant view of a fortified town with a prominent tower.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. The artist employs varied line weights to distinguish between the textures of the rocky outcrop, the foliage of the trees, and the calm surface of the water. The sky remains largely unworked, allowing the viewer to focus on the narrative elements of the scene. The inclusion of figures engaged in daily activities, such as fishing and walking, adds a sense of human presence to the rural environment.
Jan van de Velde II was a prolific engraver and etcher, known for his ability to translate the atmospheric qualities of drawings into the medium of print. The collaboration between Van der Horst and Van de Velde reflects the common practice of the era, where designers and printmakers worked in tandem to produce series of topographical or rural views. This work is part of a broader tradition of Dutch printmaking that sought to document both real and imagined locations with clarity and grace. The presence of the publisher Claes Jansz. Visscher's name at the bottom left indicates the commercial nature of the print, which was likely produced for a market of collectors interested in fine prints of rural subjects. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in the interplay between architecture and the natural world.
