A refined ink and colour study of bamboo and plum blossoms by the Qing dynasty master Wang Shishen, featuring elegant calligraphy and traditional brushwork.
Wang Shishen was a prominent member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, a group of painters active during the Qing dynasty who rejected orthodox stylistic conventions in favour of individual expression. This work displays the characteristic restraint and technical precision associated with his approach to ink wash painting. The composition features a delicate arrangement of bamboo stalks and flowering plum branches, subjects that hold traditional significance in Chinese art as symbols of resilience and moral integrity.
The artist employs a subtle palette, using muted tones of ink and soft washes of colour to define the forms. The bamboo leaves are rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes, demonstrating a mastery of brush control that prioritises the quality of the line over photographic accuracy. The plum blossoms are suggested with light touches of pigment, providing a gentle contrast to the darker, more structured bamboo. The negative space within the composition is managed with care, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the organic forms and the surrounding paper surface.
To the left, a column of elegant calligraphy provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual imagery. This integration of text and image is a hallmark of the literati tradition, where the artist's literary skill is considered equal in value to their painterly ability. The presence of red seal impressions adds a final layer of historical authenticity to the piece. This print captures the quietude and intellectual focus of the original, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the subtle tonal variations that define Wang Shishen's aesthetic. It is a representative example of the refined, scholarly style that defined the Yangzhou school during the eighteenth century.
