Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, was a prominent figure of the early Qing Dynasty. As a member of the Ming royal family who became a Buddhist monk, his life was defined by the political upheaval of the era. His artistic output often reflects a rejection of rigid orthodoxy in favour of personal expression and direct observation of nature. This work is a characteristic example of his album leaf painting, which prioritises spontaneity and a fluid interaction between brushwork and negative space.

The composition features a pavilion perched upon a gentle slope, overlooking a body of water. The artist employs a restrained palette, using muted washes of green and brown to define the terrain and foliage.
