Pan Gongshou was a prominent figure in the late Qing Dynasty, known for his adherence to the traditions of the literati painters. This work belongs to a series of studies that pay homage to the stylistic conventions established by earlier masters. The composition features a central, towering peak that dominates the visual field, rendered with controlled brushwork that balances ink wash with subtle colour application. The presence of a small temple structure at the base of the mountain provides a sense of scale, grounding the ethereal, mist-covered peaks in a recognisable human context.
The technique employed here reflects the scholar-painter tradition, where the focus remains on the expressive quality of the brush stroke rather than strict topographical accuracy. The ink is applied in varying densities to create depth, with the foreground rocks and vegetation providing a contrast to the distant, fading silhouettes of the mountains.
