An eighteenth-century etching by Swiss artist Johann Caspar Ulinger, depicting a tranquil river scene with a distant castle and a lone traveller.
This etching by the Swiss artist Johann Caspar Ulinger captures a serene rural scene, typical of the mid-eighteenth-century interest in topographical and picturesque views. Ulinger, a painter and etcher based in Zurich, produced this work as part of a series of twelve landscapes. The composition follows the conventions of the period: a foreground figure provides scale, while the eye is led along the winding river towards a distant, fortified structure.
The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the foliage and the rugged terrain of the hills. The foreground tree, with its leaning trunk and detailed leaves, frames the view, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. The inclusion of a small figure, possibly a traveller or hunter, adds a narrative element to the otherwise quiet environment. The castle, perched on the hillside, suggests a romanticised view of the Swiss countryside, blending observation with the stylistic preferences of the era.
Ulinger's work reflects the technical precision of eighteenth-century printmaking. The lines are controlled and deliberate, used to build form through light and shadow rather than relying on tonal washes. The sky, filled with light, cloud-like strokes and a few birds in flight, balances the density of the wooded area on the left. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where the natural world was often presented as a structured, harmonious space. The work remains a fine example of the regional print traditions that flourished in Switzerland during the mid-1700s, documenting both the physical geography and the artistic sensibilities of the period.
