A Neo-Impressionist oil painting by Jean Metzinger, featuring a fountain scene rendered in a systematic, mosaic-like grid of colour.
This work by Jean Metzinger dates to his early period, when he engaged with the techniques of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism. Before his transition into the geometric fragmentation of Cubism, Metzinger experimented with the application of discrete, mosaic-like brushstrokes. This method, influenced by the theories of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, relies on the optical mixing of colour rather than physical blending on the palette.
The composition features a central fountain surrounded by trees and foliage. The artist employs a systematic grid of small, square-shaped dabs of paint. These marks cover the entire surface, creating a rhythmic, textured effect that flattens the pictorial space. The palette consists of high-chroma greens, blues, and pinks, which interact to suggest light and shadow across the scene. The sun, depicted as a simple yellow circle, sits in the upper centre, casting a pale glow over the architectural elements in the background.
Metzinger's focus here is on the scientific arrangement of colour. By breaking the image down into these uniform units, he removes the traditional emphasis on brushwork as a signifier of the artist's hand. Instead, the surface becomes a field of light and colour. This approach reflects the broader interest among French painters of the early twentieth century in the relationship between optics and perception. The work demonstrates a clear departure from the fluid, spontaneous application of paint seen in earlier Impressionist works, opting for a more calculated and structural methodology. It provides a view into the experimental phase of an artist who would soon become a primary figure in the development of the Cubist movement in Paris.
