A six-panel folding screen by Zen monk Sesson Shukei, featuring a detailed ink wash depiction of mountains, water, and seasonal transitions.
Sesson Shukei, a Zen monk and painter, produced this six-panel folding screen during the Muromachi period. The work displays the characteristic ink wash techniques of the era, where varying densities of black ink create depth and atmosphere. The composition follows the traditional format of a screen, allowing the viewer to move through a narrative of changing seasons and terrain.
To the left, the scene opens into a calm, expansive body of water with small boats, suggesting a sense of distance and quietude. As the eye moves toward the right, the terrain becomes more rugged. Jagged mountain peaks emerge from swirling mists, rendered with sharp, angular brushwork. A waterfall cascades down the centre, providing a vertical anchor for the composition. Near the base, small architectural structures and figures are integrated into the rocky outcrops, suggesting a human presence within the vast natural world.
Sesson is known for his individualistic approach to the Chinese-influenced ink painting tradition. He often employed more dramatic, eccentric brushwork than his contemporaries, which is visible here in the gnarled forms of the pine trees and the textured surfaces of the cliffs. The use of light colour washes adds a subtle warmth to the paper, contrasting with the stark black ink. This screen functions as both a decorative object and a meditative piece, inviting the viewer to contemplate the shifting nature of the seasons. The balance between empty space and detailed form is a hallmark of Sesson's style, reflecting his training in Zen aesthetics. This print captures the nuanced tonal range of the original ink work, preserving the delicate transitions between the misty voids and the solid, grounded elements of the mountain landscape.
