A bold, expressionist view of a mountainous region, rendered with heavy, rhythmic brushwork and a saturated palette of autumn colours.
Marsden Hartley produced this work during a period of significant stylistic development. The painting reflects his early engagement with the aesthetic principles of European modernism, particularly the influence of Impressionism and the work of Paul Cézanne. Hartley utilised a heavy impasto technique, applying paint in rhythmic, directional strokes that define the topography of the scene.
The composition is structured around a series of horizontal bands. In the foreground, rounded, light-coloured forms suggest rocky outcrops or boulders. These transition into a dense, textured middle ground of autumnal foliage, rendered in a palette of deep greens, ochres, and reds. Beyond this, a body of water cuts across the canvas, reflecting the sky above. The distant mountains are painted in cooler tones, providing a sense of spatial recession despite the flattened, decorative quality of the brushwork.
This piece demonstrates Hartley's interest in the expressive potential of colour and form. Rather than seeking a literal transcription of the natural world, he prioritised the emotional resonance of the scene. The application of paint is deliberate and tactile, creating a surface that feels both solid and energetic. The interplay between the warm, earthy tones of the forest and the cool, expansive blues of the sky creates a visual tension that is characteristic of his early output. By focusing on the structural elements of the terrain, Hartley moved away from traditional representational modes, favouring a subjective interpretation of the environment. This work remains a clear example of his transition toward the bold, simplified forms that would define his later career.
