A delicate ink and colour wash painting by Lan Ying, capturing an atmospheric scene in the style of the Yuan master Gao Kegong.
Lan Ying was a prominent painter of the late Ming Dynasty, known for his ability to synthesise various historical styles. This work, created in the style of the Yuan Dynasty master Gao Kegong, demonstrates the characteristic ink wash techniques favoured by the Zhe School. The composition relies on the interplay between soft, atmospheric washes and controlled, deliberate brushwork to suggest form and distance.
The scene features rolling hills and clusters of trees rendered in muted tones, punctuated by the deliberate application of autumnal red pigments. This use of colour is restrained, serving to guide the eye across the paper without overwhelming the subtle tonal gradations of the ink. The negative space, or void, is an active component of the composition, representing mist or water and providing a sense of scale to the distant peaks.
Lan Ying frequently engaged with the works of earlier masters, using their techniques as a foundation for his own artistic expression. By referencing Gao Kegong, he aligns himself with the tradition of literati painting, which valued the expression of the artist's internal state through the medium of ink. The calligraphy present on the right side of the sheet provides context for the work, identifying the source of inspiration and the artist's intent. The paper surface retains a tactile quality, allowing the ink to bleed slightly at the edges of the forms, which contributes to the soft, ethereal quality of the scene. This piece is a clear example of the technical precision and aesthetic philosophy that defined the later stages of Chinese ink painting, where the balance between tradition and individual interpretation remained a central concern for practitioners.
