Wang Yuanqi, a prominent figure of the early Qing dynasty and one of the Four Wangs, produced this work in 1704. As a master of the Orthodox School, he prioritised the study of Yuan dynasty masters, particularly Huang Gongwang. This composition demonstrates his characteristic approach to brushwork and structure, where the physical form of the mountains is built through layers of dry ink and repeated texturing strokes.

The painting depicts a mountainous terrain, with peaks rising in the background and a series of dwellings tucked into the slopes. The artist employs a balanced distribution of weight, using the central mountain mass to anchor the composition while allowing the eye to travel through the winding paths and water features.
