This fan painting by Shao Gao (c. 1595-1643) exemplifies the literati tradition of the late Ming Dynasty. The composition is constrained by the fan format, requiring the artist to balance the physical curvature of the paper with the spatial requirements of a mountain scene. Shao Gao employs a calligraphic brush technique to define the gnarled, ancient tree that occupies the centre of the composition. The tree serves as a visual anchor, its dark, textured bark contrasting with the lighter, wash-based treatment of the surrounding rock formations.
To the right, a small pavilion sits tucked against the mountainside, suggesting a retreat for a scholar. The architecture is rendered with precise, thin lines, providing a sense of human scale against the imposing natural forms. The background mountains are suggested through soft ink washes, creating a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on Western-style perspective. The left side of the fan features a column of calligraphy, which integrates the written word into the visual field, a common practice in Chinese painting that links the artist's poetic expression with the painted image.
