A refined ink and colour study by Wang Yuanqi, paying homage to the minimalist aesthetic of the Yuan dynasty master Ni Zan.
Wang Yuanqi, a prominent member of the Four Wangs, produced this work in 1697. As a scholar-official and painter, he operated within the tradition of the Orthodox School, which prioritised the study and emulation of Yuan dynasty masters. This composition pays homage to the style of Ni Zan, a figure known for his sparse, detached approach to ink wash painting.
The image presents a tiered composition, typical of the period, where the foreground and background are separated by a void representing water or mist. The foreground features a cluster of trees with varied brushwork, their forms rendered with dry, layered ink strokes. Beyond this, a rocky outcrop rises, constructed through a series of textured dots and lines that define the geological mass. The artist employs a restrained palette, using light washes of colour to suggest earth and foliage, while the primary structure relies on the calligraphic quality of the ink.
In the upper section, the artist includes a colophon, a common feature in Chinese painting that integrates text and image. This inscription provides context for the work, documenting the artist's engagement with the aesthetic principles of his predecessors. The balance between the empty space and the dense, textured forms of the rocks and trees creates a sense of quietude. The work reflects the intellectual rigour of the Qing dynasty literati, who viewed painting as a means of personal cultivation and historical dialogue. By referencing Ni Zan, Wang Yuanqi demonstrates his technical mastery and his position within a lineage of painters who valued the expressive potential of brush and ink over realistic representation.
