A classic eighteenth-century portrait by Joshua Reynolds, depicting Lady Sarah Bunbury in a mythological scene as a Roman priestess.
Joshua Reynolds painted this full-length portrait of Lady Sarah Bunbury in 1765. The work depicts the sitter in the guise of a Roman priestess, performing a ritual sacrifice before a statue of the Three Graces. This approach, known as history portraiture, allowed Reynolds to elevate his subjects by placing them within a classical, mythological context. Lady Sarah stands in a graceful, contrapposto pose, her gaze directed towards the altar where she pours an offering. Her attire consists of flowing, antique-style drapery, which contrasts with the more contemporary appearance of the attendant figure seated to the right.
The composition is structured around the verticality of the altar and the figure of Lady Sarah, creating a sense of theatricality. Reynolds employs a warm, earthy palette, using light to draw attention to the sitter's face and the smoke rising from the incense burner. The background features architectural elements that suggest an open-air temple, providing a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective. The painting reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with antiquity, a period when the Grand Tour and the study of classical sculpture heavily influenced British aesthetic tastes.
Reynolds was a master of texture, evident in the way he renders the heavy fabric of the robes and the metallic sheen of the sacrificial vessel. The inclusion of the Three Graces statue serves as a visual anchor, linking the portrait to the traditions of Renaissance and Baroque art. This work remains a representative example of Reynolds's ability to blend individual likeness with allegorical themes, a practice that defined his career as the first President of the Royal Academy. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
