A precise eighteenth-century botanical study of Lachenalia aloides by Dutch explorer Robert Jacob Gordon, rendered in delicate watercolour.
This botanical study by Robert Jacob Gordon captures the Lachenalia aloides with scientific precision. Gordon, a Dutch explorer and soldier stationed at the Cape of Good Hope, produced a vast collection of drawings documenting the flora and fauna of Southern Africa during the late eighteenth century. His work is valued for its observational accuracy, providing a record of species as they appeared to European naturalists of the period.
The composition is spare and focused. The plant occupies the centre of the page, flanked by two elongated, lanceolate leaves that frame the central raceme of tubular flowers. Gordon employs a muted palette, using subtle washes of olive green and soft yellow to define the structure of the plant. The application of paint is controlled, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible, which gives the work a light, airy quality characteristic of eighteenth-century field studies.
Unlike the highly stylised floral prints of the Victorian era, this drawing prioritises the morphological features of the specimen. The artist includes the handwritten label 'aloe dichotoma' at the base, a common practice in his field journals to ensure taxonomic clarity. The lack of background detail directs the viewer's attention entirely to the plant's form, reflecting the empirical spirit of the Enlightenment. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of colonial exploration and natural history, where the act of drawing was a primary method for cataloguing the natural world. It is a piece that appeals to those interested in the history of botany and the development of scientific illustration.
