A 1894 lithographic poster by Pierre Bonnard for the Parisian magazine La Revue Blanche, featuring bold silhouettes and a distinctive graphic style.
Pierre Bonnard created this lithographic poster in 1894 to advertise the Parisian literary and artistic magazine, La Revue Blanche. The composition reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were popular among the Nabis group of artists at the time. Bonnard employs a flattened perspective and bold, graphic silhouettes to capture the attention of the passerby on the streets of Paris.
The central figure is a woman dressed in a voluminous dark coat and a large hat, her face partially obscured by shadow. She holds a copy of the magazine, which serves as a subtle advertisement within the image itself. Beside her, a small child or figure appears in a more whimsical, sketch-like style, providing a contrast to the heavy, dark mass of the woman's attire. The background is filled with a repetitive, wallpaper-like pattern of the magazine's title, which creates a sense of texture and depth without relying on traditional modelling.
Bonnard uses a limited palette of black, dark brown, and cream, allowing the stark contrast to define the forms. The typography is integrated into the design, with the large, hand-drawn letters of the title anchoring the bottom of the frame. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance commercial requirements with his own stylistic preferences. The poster does not merely inform the viewer of the publication's existence, but rather evokes the atmosphere of the bohemian circles that the magazine represented. By focusing on the silhouette and the graphic arrangement of text and image, Bonnard produces a piece that functions as both an effective advertisement and a distinct work of art.
